Constitution of India, Article 21, 26 – Live-in relationship – Life and liberty -- Police protection – Right of -- Petitioners are over 18 years of age, are in a live-in-relationship and they have an apprehension that the private respondents might cause physical harm to them -- Petition disposed of with a direction to SSP to look into the representation and take steps, if necessary, in accordance with law to protect the life and liberty of the petitioners.

1. Heard through video conferencing.
2. The petitioners are seeking a direction to the official respondents to protect their life and liberty as they have been threatened by the private respondents.
3. Learned counsel for the petitioners contends that the petitioners, who are over 18 years of age, are in a live-in-relationship and they have an apprehension that the private respondents might cause physical harm to them. He has drawn my attention to the representation dated 17.07.2021 (Annexure P-4) sent by the petitioners to Senior Superintendent of Police, Tarn Taran-respondent No.2.
4. Issue notice to respondents No.1 to 3 only.
5. At the asking of the Court, Mr. Dhruv Dayal, Senior DAG, Punjab, accepts notice on behalf of respondents No.1 to 3.
6. Without expressing any opinion on the merits of the case and keeping in view the limited prayer of the petitioners, the petition is disposed of with a direction to respondent No.2-Senior Superintendent of Police, Tarn Taran to look into the representation dated 17.07.2021 (Annexure P-4) and take steps, if necessary, in accordance with law to protect the life and liberty of the petitioners.
7. However, it is clarified that this order shall not be taken to validate the relationship of the petitioners or protect them from any criminal proceedings instituted in accordance with law.
Order accordingly.
